VETS PROVE THEY STILL HAVE WHAT IT TAKES

GRRP completed its sixth successful year of the Veterans Program for the residents of the Michigan Home for Veterans. We had over twenty Vets participate this year--with an average attendance of nine shooters per week. In a few cases, the guys dropped out because they felt that their performance was below what they expected; brought about by the stellar shooting of some of the others. An example of this was the almost unbelievable scores consistently shot by Bruce Kelly, one of the oldest and wheelchair-bound shooters. Because of his physical debilitation, he could’t even operate the bolt of the rifle (a range office was there to assist,) but he could aim and fire with a precision adequate to shoot in the mid to high nineties on the Light Rifle Target!

All of the shooters showed excellent improvement as the season progressed. Most of them had scores in the mid thirties at the beginning, but, by the end of the season were shooting in the mid eighties, to mid nineties. Paul Mc Guire, Terry Cobb and Lou VanKovering ran the program and had a great time with all the Vets and their activities director, Ray Wertz. Based on the ongoing comments, Friday mornings were the high point of everybody's week.

Awards were given to the top three shooters in the wheelchair class and the top three ambulatory shooters. There was also a “most improved scores” award. Trophies were awarded on the total cumulative score, which made it requisite for the shooter to attend all matches in order to earn a trophy. Paul Mc Guire and Lou VanKoevering donated some of their "personally earned" trophies from years past to be re-badged by a trophy dealer. And, all of the ammunition and four of the rifles were donated by members of GRRP.

This is an excellent public service program run by GRRP, we hope to continue it for many years to come. The league's season starts in September and runs through May. If you are interested in donating to the Veterans League contact Lou VanKoevering at:
